Miracles Never Cease
Part II                Written By: Donna Lynn Eaton

Robert did well for about six years then he started having seizures. He has been on seizure medicine since the wreck because of all the damage he had to his head. He then had to be tested again and go on stronger medicine. He had more seizures they tried different ones and finally got one to work. This caused him to lose he licenses and had to quit the fire dept. He had nothing left but his family and TV. He got very depressed again, no one but family came around and he didn't get to do anything except with his family and the church. The family petted him a lot (spoiled him rotten was more like it) but he deserved it
One night on August 6, 1986 I got a call from mama, Robert was having a seizure and the paramedics could not get him out of it. He had very bad seizures his head would draw to one side and his arms would draw back and he would jerk all over. He would shake so bad that the pictures on the wall would shake. I left as soon as she called and I lived about twenty minutes away. When I got there they were still there. A doctor had come from the hospital to work on him. They couldn't get him stable enough to move him. I knew it was bad then, because I have never known of a doctor coming to a house from the hospital before. I went in he was still shaking and unconscious. The doctor said we're going to have to get him to the hospital or we're going to lose him. They took him to the Lexington Hospital, we followed them. They worked on him a while and had to put him to sleep like for surgery to calm him down.
They later transferred him to the Trauma Center at the Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem NC They worked on him what seemed like forever. The doctor came out and told us that he was calm and that he had a stroke because of the seizure. They were running test to find out what caused this severe seizure. He was in another coma again. They let us in to see him. He looked so bad he was very pale and looked dead. The same feelings came right back as did when he was in the wreck.
The doctor was in the hall to talk to us when we came out. We asked him why Robert's eyes looked so flat, they looked like two fried eggs and they had no shine at all. The doctor said they thought his eyes were already like that. He said they saw the scars, and didn't know what kind of damage he already had. He couldn't believe Robert was almost normal with the kind of scars he had. We told the doctor about Robert and how he was. Then they went in to run more test. They finally found that Robert had a brain abscess that had busted .The doctor told us that one out of a thousand lived through this. Robert ran a 105 fever for 4 days that wouldn't go down. They told us if he came out of the coma and lived he would have brain damage. And he could be a vegetable. They also told us that Robert was paralyzed on his left side. If he lived and was not brain dead he was going to need a lot of physical therapy.
Robert came out of the coma, he knew all the family. He couldn't walk or talk but we could communicate in other ways. In just a little while he got to where he could whisper. He stayed in the hospital for twenty five days. He had to go back and forth to the hospital for therapy.  And after a lot of therapy he got to where he could walk with a cane. The stroke didn't affect his mouth as far as being paralyzed. But we noticed that his mind seemed younger than before but at least he was not a vegetable.                                                   The doctors never found out what caused the abscess and we were always afraid it could happen again. They did say that his heart couldn't take another seizure.  Mama quit work to take care of Robert and my stepfather was also put on disability later on so both of them are home to care for Robert. All Robert has to do is to set at home, watch TV and eat.
He gained a lot of weight over the years and has high blood. And now the doctors fuss at him for his weight.  It is now 1996 and Robert is still at home and he still doesn't have any friends his age but he is happy with things like they are. He still talks a lot of army stuff a lot of it happened the night before on a John Wayne Movie but we just listen. Sometimes the tales get a little wild and we tell him that it didn't happen but he just laughs. Like I said He is rotten! And he Knows it too!  Everyone knows how he is and they just look over him or pick with him about some of the things he tells. Me and Robert are still very close, we pick and hit on each other and he always wants me to wrestle with him but I'm afraid I'll hurt him. Our wrestling consist of him sitting on the floor and I sit on the floor in front of him  dodging his hits or I'll lay him backwards on the floor and act like I'm sitting on his belly. He gets so tickled I have to set him up. But he loves it.
He has to go to the Salisbury VA.Hospital for checkups and some therapy they wanted him to go there every day or so to get therapy in the pool so mama had him an in ground pool put in at her house. This will give him something to do this summer.
